Job Description

The Casino Studio team are responsible for the first party content delivered to a Tier one global gaming service serving over 2.5b game rounds per month.  Connecting 300+ operator brands to over 60 content partners, we launch around 250 new games per quarter on the network. 

To spearhead the next phase of growth and transformation within Studios it has been deemed necessary to identify an experienced individual to take up the role of Head of Engineering for Games. 

Based in Bristol, and reporting to the Director of Studio Operations, this is a pivotal role within the division. The role is responsible for developing and implementing the technical and engineering strategies that support the Casino gaming studio business. The role will have full accountability for all engineering teams including QA. The appointee would lead a multicultural team of 50+ people based in Bristol, Athens, Stockholm, Pune and Montreal.  It is a highly visible and important role within the group and requires an experienced engineering leader to set and execute the technology strategy for one of our key content throughout our Studios.  

A key focus of the role will be building world-class games with a focus on automation, scalability.  The individual, leading the team, will also be responsible for defining the technology owned parts of the Studio frameworks.  Along with peers, the individual will be responsible for ensuring the roadmap is delivered both on time and to a high standard.  Shifting the team working practices to become a true cutting-edge team and working on innovative products like Jackpot Wars. 

The appointee will have regular contact with internal stakeholders from other parts of the organization as part of ongoing operations. Naturally, they will also need to build good working relationships across the group internally, championing the Studio teams and ensuring alignment with other parts of the business.

Specific Responsibilities include:  

  • Helping to define the technical strategy for our Studios across Casino, Bingo and Lottery 

  • Provide transparency around objectives and success metrics and the direction and progress towards these objectives. 

  • Guide, coach and mentor product & software development engineers and lead them by example.  

  • Provide technical leadership for every aspect of software.  

  • Establish and stimulate software development standards and processes along with best practices for the delivery of scalable and high-quality software.  

  • Develop deep and strong understanding the technologies, tools and techniques used within the team whilst also keeping SGD at the forefront of technology innovation 

  • Work closely with the Creative team and developers on issues related to design and requirements 

  • Help the development team to build high-quality products. Make all developers aware what are the quality standards in the organization, what value they bring in and encourage them to make the standards even better  

  • Drive change to implement efficient and effective strategies as advised by management  

  • Drive cost efficiency and technology modernisation programs.   

  • Build and promote a positive working environment for the team within your areas as well as other business areas you will engage with.  

  • Effectively manage team members in line with company culture and values, providing effective, valuable feedback on daily basis.

Qualifications

The appointee will be an experienced software development leader, ideally with strong client-side experience including iOS and Android. The ability to manage sizable multisite and multicultural teams in the past highly desirable. Familiar with large company environments, they will be able to navigate matrix structures and build relationships across the organisation. At the same time, they should be oriented towards results and be comfortable in fast-paced and sometimes less formal environments.  

The successful candidate will be a good communicator, capable of building and maintaining relationships with customers and stakeholders. Effectively managing a remote multisite team is not an easy task, so previous experience operating in a similar set up would be highly desired. While the team is well set up, strong leadership skills will be required. The appointee should have an eye for excellent engineering talent to continue to grow a high performing team. Having the vision to adapt the team structure to the evolving need of the business and customers is also required.  The culture of the organisation promotes opportunity for development and growth of the employees, so a similar mindset would be welcomed by the team and the wider business. 

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate an ability to effectively run the day-to-day operations for a large Studio team. They will have a hands-on approach and be capable of reviewing or writing the code.  

The appointee would have ideally operated in an innovative environment and had experience with large scale transformation and migration programs.  

SGD are looking for individuals who can illustrate the following experience, knowledge and competencies:  

  • Multi-industry experience with a high transaction platform business. 

  • Preferably you will have experience in CI/CD in a native iOS environment as a minimum have an awareness about the challenges this brings 

  • Experience in setting up and/or working with cross-functional teams.   

  • Ability and experience of building productive cooperation with internal teams, customers, suppliers and business stakeholders. 

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.  

  • Track record of running mobile/client-side engineering team(s) delivering products using modern methodologies where quality is defined and measured.  

  • Instil a structured and scalable Engineering culture. 

  • Experience with various methodologies; Agile, TDD or Kanban. 

  • Experience of reviewing others’ work for performance, security, efficiency and portability.
